Our Story Goes Back to 1962

Monroe’s has been serving the best in New Mexican cuisine to local residents and their families for over six decades. It began as a small drive-in near Old Town Albuquerque, specializing in high-quality, reasonably priced New Mexican food. As Monroe’s grew to national recognition, it has never forgotten its roots as a neighborhood gathering place.

A Legacy of Dedication

In 2007, Miguel Diaz was named New Mexico’s Restaurateur of the Year by the New Mexico Restaurant Association, a tribute to his fifty-plus years in the industry, community support, and dedication to his staff. Diaz’s impressive career exemplifies the American ideal of working your way to the top. Over the years, he has been a soda jerk, short-order cook, Italian and French chef, restaurant manager, and ultimately the owner of two highly successful Monroe’s locations.

Beyond the kitchen, Diaz’s accomplishments include playing semi-pro baseball, serving in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne, and being an original member of the Army’s All American Chorus. He moved to Albuquerque in 1975, launched a snack bar, and a year later purchased Monroe’s. The rest, as they say, is history.

Our Story

Our Food

Monroe’s is famous for its Green Chile Cheeseburger, a must-try for anyone visiting Albuquerque. Our menu also features red and green chile under the Miguel’s label, including unique items like red chile honey, perfect for topping our flaky, golden sopaipillas.

From sandwiches and New Mexican platters to breakfast plates, house specialties, and “gringo” dinners, Monroe’s menu has something for everyone. We embrace a family-style approach where the entire wait staff is dedicated to your satisfaction, ensuring you feel welcome and cared for during every visit.

Serving over 150,000 pounds of chile annually, Monroe’s has perfected its recipes to deliver authentic flavor with just the right amount of heat. Our carne adovada enchiladas, made with blue corn tortillas and served flat, have been recognized by Frommer’s Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque Travel Guide as among “the most unforgettable Northern New Mexico experiences.”

Our New Mexican platters include Spanish rice, refried beans topped with melted cheddar cheese, chips and salsa, and our famous sopapillas served with real honey and never syrup. Each dish is prepared with care to ensure an authentic, satisfying experience.

A Place to Gather

Monroe’s has thrived because it remains true to its roots as a neighborhood gathering place. We encourage guests to make themselves at home, enjoy great food, and let us know any special needs or requests. Special orders and substitutions are always welcome as we aim to please and put customers first.

Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or a full meal with family and friends, Monroe’s combines authentic New Mexican flavors with a warm, welcoming atmosphere you’ll want to return to again and again.
